work at home momIt’s nice to feel appreciated. And no, gooey hands on your keyboard attached to an over-enthusiastic toddler while you’re trying to finish just one-more-thing don’t count. Moms are supposed to say things like, “don’t worry about it– I don’t need anything.” But you do need something. Whether it’s for fun or for work (and hopefully you find working from home fun), you need something.

That “something” might be an extremely large box bottle of wine or that something might be a fantastic pair of noise cancelling headphones so you can get blissfully lost in Mozart while your spouse wrangles the kids for you in another room. The fact is that you’re doing something amazing. You’re combining the at-home mommy life with the full time working mommy life. You have a thousand jobs rolled into one.

Screw the mommy wars, because you’re on both sides of it. You’re living the dream of working from home. You get to skip the daycare bills while working in your PJ’s and you have the envy of more than one mom out there.

You’re lucky. But what people don’t see is that it’s really hard. Your house is a mess, you’re scrambling to finish just one more client project but your 3 year old suddenly has pink eye. Now you have pink eye. Now your 1st grader is throwing up all over his bed. Now he’s throwing up all over your bed. But you still have to finish that client project, even if it’s 2 am. And you get to do it again tomorrow while taking care of the kids all over again. We all know that the kids win over work every single time. You wouldn’t trade it for anything, but gosh darnit, you deserve a great mother’s day gift. Casually send this link to your kids and post it on your Facebook page… someone is bound to get the hint.

Gift Idea #1: Noise Canceling Headphones

I have the Skullcandy Hesh 2 headphones and they rock my world. Okay, so you can’t use them while you’re supposed to be watching the kids, but you can use them while they’re in someone else’s care but still managing to distract you with their cute little voices. These things are a great way to get lost in your work. Perfect if you tend to lose focus.

Gift Idea #2: iPad Air + Keyboard Case

It’s impossible to be at your desk all the time as a mom. As a work at home mom, you have to take your work with you on the go more often than not. I had a laptop for years but decided to get a desktop recently because I guess I’m getting old and need the giant screen of an iMac. But I also need the amazing awesomeness of my iPad Air. Which brings me to my 3rd love, my Sharkk iPad Air keyboard case. It turns my iPad into a laptop and I actually do most of my writing on it nowadays. Love it… and so will you.

Gift Idea #3: Black Box Wine (I wasn’t kidding about the boxed wine)

blackbox

I love Black Box Wine. Enough said. I mean, I keep it around for so long the box really does help keep it fresher.

Gift Idea #4: These Great Books

The Copywriter’s Handbook, Third Edition: A Step-By-Step Guide To Writing Copy That Sells You have to know how to write copy. Bob Bly is one of the best there is. With the book above, you’ll know more about copy than you could have learned from some of the thousand-dollar courses out there. Learn from tons of different copywriters and never stop learning.

Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time Brian Tracy is someone I’m always inspired by. As an at-home mom, you need to manage your time wisely so you can get a whole lot more done than the average bear. This book is a great starting point.

Goals!: How to Get Everything You Want — Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible Setting goals is so, so important. You wouldn’t go on a huge trip across the country without a road map, so you should run your business without a road map. This book is cheap and super helpful.

Gift Idea #5: A Weekend Away

You’re supposed to want to be around your kids and your work all the time, right? No? I didn’t think so. Finagle yourself a weekend far, far away. By yourself or with friends. You’ll be amazed at how refreshed and rejuvenated you’ll feel after just a couple of days away.

Gift Idea #6: A Day To Yourself

How amazing would it be to be in your house, alone, with zero distractions. You could work, or read, or watch TV, or do whatever it is you want to do. Buy game or movie tickets for your family and send them away for the day. It’ll be that much sweeter when they come home at the end of the day.

Gift Idea #7: Amazon Fire TV

I’m obsessed with this, currently, so it had to make the list. You need one, stat, if you’re as addicted to quality TV as I am. Watch all the Parenthood and Scandal you can handle

Gift Idea #8: The Best Bubble Bath In History

Get yourself a glass of wine, follow this bubble bath recipe, get a good book or your Kindle, and enjoy life for an hour or two. Away from work, away from everything. Calgon, take me away.

Gift Idea #9: A Day Of Pampering

What if you don’t really want alone time? I know that’s what I usually want, but sometimes I want to spend every single second with my adorable kids and family. If they offered to pamper me for the day too, well, I wouldn’t mind that at all. Breakfast in bed, a massage, and some cuddle time on the couch would make my heart smile.

Now, this list might seem a little bit random. If you know me well, you’re nodding and smiling. These 9 things make me blissfully happy. They’re things I’ve gotten or things I dream of getting to make work at home a little easier. Does this list speak to you? What would you put on your list? The greatest gift of Mother’s day is getting to be a mother. The second greatest gift is whatever your family chooses to spoil you with this May. I hope you have a fantastic Mother’s day– you deserve it.
